The odds and what they mean
The odds represent the publics opinion of each horses chances of winning a race, based on how they actually bet. A horses odds reflect how much has been bet on it to win the race. Horses that are given a better chance of winning (favorites) will pay off less than the horses that are not expected to run well (longshots).
Odds in the newspaper or track program reflect a horses morning line odds. Morning line odds are set by oddsmakers and handicappers before the betting actually begins, and are meant to represent the best estimation of what a horses odds will actually be.
Actual odds are posted before each race, and can change constantly until the race begins. The current odds are always posted on television and computer screens and on the racetrack tote board leading up to a race. The posted odds are based on win wagers only. All posted win prices are posted to reflect winnings for each $2 bet. If you are confused by the odds and are never sure what your horse is going to pay if it wins, it is easy to calculate the approximate payoffs by doubling the odds and then adding in the cost of a $2 wager. For example: If the odds are 4-1, a $2 win bet would pay $10 (4 x $2 = $8 + $2 = $10).
When in doubt, you can always consult the following table:

If $10 is bet at odds of 4, the total returned is $40 ($10 x 4) and the potential profit is $30 ($10 x 4 minus the $10 stake). Fractional Odds. Used mostly in the United Kingdom and Ireland, fractions quote the potential profit should the bet succeed, relative to the stake. If $10 is bet at odds of 3/1, the potential profit is $30 ($10 x 3). To calculate winnings on fractional odds, multiply your bet by the top number (numerator), then divide the result by the bottom (denominator). So a $10 bet at 5/2 odds is (10. 5) / 2, which equals $25. A $10 bet at 2/5 odds is (10. 2) / 5, which is $4.

The craps payout chart below shows various payout statistics such as what kind of craps bets, true odds, payout odds and the total house edge after everything has been calculated through. As you can see from the payout table, there are many bets that sound exotic and arcane but they really aren't that good, even though they may sound like the 'secret' bets that no one knows about. Really the only good ones are the pass line or don't pass in conjunction with the free odds bets. There are a few other decent ones as well. The trick to know is that when the house edge is a very low percentage, then the bet is a good one.
Also remember the fact that the number 7 is rolled more often than any other number. The 2 and 12 (snake eyes and box cars) are rolled the least and have low probabilities of coming out. You can read about this in our odds and probabilities page if you would like to understand the concept behind this. For additional odds information, please view our craps probability odds page for information about true odds of rolling the dice and also visit our Vegas free odds page for information about odds payouts and house edge.
